Think It Through

What are you thinking when your alarm goes off in the morning? Do you immediately jump up, raring to go, or do you groan and look at the upcoming day with dread? Most of us have trouble summoning motivation sometimes, but it can make a huge difference to how successful we are in our day-to-day lives.

Now, it’s all very well saying you need a positive attitude to get anywhere, but making a positive mindset appear is a little trickier. Life is stressful. We all have too much that we need to do and not enough time to do it. That’s even before we start looking at the state of the wider world, which always seems to be on the verge of collapse.

So, what can you do? Well, taking care of yourself physically can help. Eat right, exercise regularly, get enough sleep; you might be tired of hearing it, but these are the things that always put you in the best position to take on the world. Who can concentrate properly when they’re hungry or tired?

You may also want to try things like mindfulness and meditation, which can make you more aware of yourself and your feelings. They don’t work for everyone, but for some people, it’s a good way to recognize what’s going on in their heads and figure out ways to deal with it.

Sometimes getting some outside support can help. Having other people around, whether it’s friends and family or professionals, can make everything a little less daunting. They can provide encouragement when you don’t have the energy to do it yourself. Health can be a community activity.

These supposedly simple steps aren’t always easy, especially if you’re suffering from depression or another mental illness. In that case, you may need to go to a doctor and get some combination of medication and therapy to help you manage your brain when it tries to bring you down.

In general, this means there are two things you have to remember when it comes to mindset. You can’t just dismiss it as a minor thing about which you don’t need to worry, and just because you’ve realized it’s important, that doesn’t mean you can just switch it on and off at will. Getting in the right mindset takes work, and it’s an ongoing struggle that’s never truly over.
